Local Group Hosts Geocaching Event In Kearney

Posted: Updated:

Many families came to dig for treasures in Kearney as part of the third annual Crane Cache Dash.

Kearney Parks and Recreation and the Crane River Theatre Company put on the event during the peak of the Sandhill crane migration.

It's an outdoor treasure hunt using GPS enabled devices to find hidden containers. The race started and ended at Yanny Park.

The teams went through a training session to learn how to use the devices and to help understand what they were searching for.

"It's just something that we like to put on. Geocaching isn't really known around Kearney, so we like to promote it. It's becoming bigger so we like to put on this race for all the local participants," said Kearney Parks and Recreation Coordinator Kiane Alberts.

Strategy was key as they had to try and decode the symbols, codes, and clues. The catch was that the containers were hidden all over Kearney as far north as the Hill Top Mall and as far south as Fort Kearney recreation area.

"Well at first we typed in the coordinates wrong so that kind of screwed us up and it was kind of like really hard to find some of the boxes," said race participants Austin and Abby Young.

"Well most of the time I just stayed in the car. I'm like motivational crew," shared race participant Castor Ruyle.

"We had a good time and a lot of laughs," said race participant Connie Jelkin.

The free event was for all ages, and meant to be a fun-filled family event.

Top winners received prizes from area businesses, but all participants had an opportunity to win door prizes. This is just one of many events held during the week long Crane Watch Festival running through March 30.
