NE Burger Joint Beefs Up Restaurant Scene in Kearney

Posted: Updated:

A new burger joint is beefing up the restaurant scene in downtown Kearney.

NE Burger will open its doors for the first time on March 31. At its foundation it's pretty simple -- a burger or cheeseburger -- but when it comes to toppings to place on the patty, the options seem almost endless.

"We have hand cut french fries seasoned just the way you would like it," adds NE Burger owner Shawn Hagan.

Those seasoned fries combined with perfectly flipped patties are what NE Burgers will be dishing out. The joint is sticking to the basics with a 100 percent fresh Nebraska beef burger, never frozen.

"When people order their beef, they want to know where it comes from, and what better place than Nebraska," said Cody Amnott, a NE Burger employee.

Hagan grew up in the area and owning restaurants is part of the family. "My folks were in the restaurant business as a kid. It's something I have always enjoyed doing so this was an opportunity for us to get back into that," explained Hagan.

NE Burger will be the third business his family has taken on. "This was the type of business that downtown could use," Hagan said. "Our goal is to get people in and out for people who have a short lunch hour."

"We cook everything well done, but it's juicy and all fresh toppings. You can get anything from grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapenos, to hot sauce. We can load that thing up for you with whatever you want on it," said Hagan. All those extra toppings won't drive up your bill either; they come with no extra charge.

The owner also has a story behind how the restaurant name came to be. "It's kind of a play–off of Nebraska with the 'N' [and the] 'E', but you can get N–E burger N–E way you like it."

It isn't just about the burger though. Shawn and Natalie Hagan fill out the menu with other items like hot dogs, soups, chili, and hand spun shakes. Take out is available but they don't deliver.

NE Burger will be open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located inside the Kaufmann Centre at 2202 Central Avenue in Kearney.
