Need for New Schools Focus of GI School Board Retreat

Posted: Updated:

The need for school improvements is on the agenda in Grand Island, where the school board will host a retreat this weekend.

Grand Island Public Schools is laying the groundwork for a bond issue. They're most concerned about open concept schools.

Those are schools where classrooms were built without walls and students flow from room to room, leading to distractions.

The Grand Island school board will meet Friday starting at 4 p.m. and Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at Riverside Golf Club. Those meetings are open to the public.

The next phase of planning for the future of Grand Island Public Schools is underway.

A facilities task force has met over the last several months, and school officials also held community meetings to find out what parents and neighborhoods think about possible changes.

The district has identified six schools that may need work, including Stolley Park Elementary, Engleman Elementary, Shoemaker Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Starr Elementary and Grand Island Senior High.

School officials say growth and space issues they face include increasing enrollment and the fact that older buildings can't accommodate as much programming.
