Hastings Public Library Celebrates Children, Encourages Reading

Posted: Updated:

The Hastings Public Library has put a unique spin on a celebration that is putting children in the spotlight: Dia De Los Ninos, Dia De Los Libros -- 'Children's Day, Book Day.'

Originally a Hispanic holiday to celebrate children, when brought to the U.S., literacy was incorporated into the holiday to encourage children to read.

And while there may be different ways to learn how to read, organizers say books are still important.

"Especially when young people are starting out, the physical book feels good in their hands and they can just manipulate the pages," said Hastings Public Library's Kathy Schultz. "But reading whether it's online or in school, it's just so important for them to learn to read."

This is the seventh year for the festival, which included activities hosted by different community organizations.

Each child under the age of 12 took home a brand new book as well.
