'Another Week, Another Rise' Say Petroleum Analysts, More to Come

Posted: Updated:

Gas prices have seen yet another rise at the pumps across the state since last week, with the average price in Nebraska seeing a jump of 6.2 cents per gallon.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon of gas in the Cornhusker State on Sunday was $3.51. This comes in only two cents shy of the national average which saw a small rise in comparison, of 1.8 cents per gallon.

Despite the rise in prices during the past week, the cost per gallon in Nebraska is 5.5 cents lower than the same day last year but 10.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has seen a jump of .2 cents per gallon during the last month but is also lower than last year's prices by 8.3 cents per gallon.

"Another week, another rise," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.

They blame the increase on a drop in product volume and refinery maintenance and speculate that prices will continue to rise at the pumps.

"While gasoline prices have seen slight increases in the last week, it still may get worse," said DeHann.

"Last week, the EIA reported a large drop in gasoline inventories as refiners purged supplies of winter spec gasoline. Refineries also utilized a lower amount of their capacity as maintenance season continues," DeHaan said. "In the next few weeks as maintenance is finished, there could be localized price spikes. While gasoline prices are lower than I would have expected a few months ago, there is still some risk for higher prices in the days ahead."
