Bill Advances, Would Prohibit Discrimination for Sexual Orientation

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska lawmakers might soon begin debate on a bill that would prohibit employers from discriminating based on sexual orientation.

The judicial committee advanced the bill on Monday with a five to one vote.

The bill by Senator Danielle Conrad of Lincoln would include an exception for religious organizations as well as religious schools and colleges.

Several conservative senators plan to fight the bill.

Current state law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, marital status or national origin but leaves out sexual orientation.
