Cyclists Emerge as Weather Warms, Officials Urge Safety on Roadways

Posted: Updated:

As warm weather approaches many will be getting out their bikes and heading out onto the roadways, prompting officials to issue a few warnings and reminders.

The North Platte Police Department is reminding the public that spring is a time that many children will be learning how to ride their bicycles, creating a special problem for drivers. The department warns that new bicycle riders may not have the proper judgement when determining traffic conditions.

The department says to be extra cautious in school zones and neighborhoods where kids may be playing, and warns drivers to be on the lookout for riders who may not signal their turns or be as aware of their surroundings as they should.

Officials maintain that bicyclists of any age have the same rights and responsibilities as other roadway users and must often share a lane. Drivers are warned to use extra caution as bicyclists may be hard to see, paying particular attention at intersections.

Collisions between vehicles and bicycles often occur when proper roadway rules aren't followed.

The most common collisionsoccur when drivers are turning in front of an oncoming bicycle or turning right, acrossthe path of the bicycle.  Officials say drivers should waitfor the cyclist to pass before attempting to turn.

Vehicles should also leave at least a three feet clearance from bicycles and slow down when passing.

The department urges all, drivers and cyclists, to follow the rules of the road and be safe.
