State Parks To Re-Open Earlier Than Expected

Posted: Updated:

Outdoor enthusiasts will soon be able to visit area state recreation areas sooner than expected.

Parks like Odessa's Union Pacific Recreational Area were closed over the winter as employees worked on a backlog of maintenance issues. Some of the staff from the closed parks worked on building double vaulted toilets to replace older toilets, one of the biggest needs in the park system.

Officials say their hard work will allow the parks to open sooner than their expected date of May 1.

"We were just able to get the work done and our crews worked quick enough to get those projects done and completed with their areas," said Nebraska Game and Parks Deputy Director Tim McCoy. "And now they're back at their parks ready to open back up."

State funding from the Legislature will allow more work on maintenance backlog at parks throughout the summer and into the fall.
