Amazon is paying their workers thousands to quit but they hope their employees don't take the offer.
The online retailer said they are offering some employees up to $5,000 to hand in their notice. The offer starts at $2,000 and goes up to $3,000 the year after that. The payoff rises each year until it hits $5,000.
The offer is for warehouse workers only, the people who pack and ship customer orders and it comes at a time when Amazon is actually building more warehouses and hiring workers.
The company doesn't actually want their employees to quit, just the opposite.
The offer is made under the headline, "please don't take this offer" as a way for Amazon to hang on to their happy workers.
In a letter to shareholders, CEO Jeff Bezos said, "the goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want. In the long-run, and employees staying somewhere they don't want to be isn't healthy for the company."
It's the old thinking that a happy worker is a more productive worker.
