Lexington Fundraiser to Benefit Royal Family Kids Camp in Cozad

Posted: Updated:

A local fundraiser sheds light on the ever growing needs of foster children in rural communities.

Lexington residents attended a barbeque dinner Friday night to help raise money for the Royal Family Kids Camp in Cozad.

Organizers hope to bring in 40 foster kids to this year's camp, up from 25 last year. And while some may say it's only a problem in metropolitan areas, the increase of campers in rural communities proves different.

"We can definitely find the kids, there's no doubt 40 kids in this area that have been abused, neglected or abandoned that are currently in foster care or have been in foster care," said Cozad camp director Sheila Garrett. "And so the challenge is to find the adults to help with camp and the funding to support the kids, because it's free for the kids to come to camp."

Organizers say the program offers all current and past foster kids a week–long camping experience to let them have fun and be a kid.

REPORTER'S NOTES: The cost for Royal Family Kids Camp is $500 per foster child and funds raised will also help with adult volunteers as well. More information on helping fund Cozad's or camps in your area can be found at royalfamilykids.org.
