GI Area Habitat Dedicates Home 75

Posted: Updated:
A Grand Island family is settling into their new home as the local Habitat for Humanity chapter celebrates a milestone.

This is Home #75 for the Grand Island Area Habitat.

After more than a year of work, the Nunez-Fregoso family of five will move from efficiency apartment living to a three-bedroom house.  They had to help build Habitat houses to accumulate 500 hours of sweat equity before they could have the keys.

“It is just such a great feeling that we really are going to have to get used to because it was a dream that we had, but we never thought that we would realize it this soon in our lives,” says mom and new homeowner Laura.

Habitat officials say this is the fourth home that Grand Island Northwest’s construction class has built for them.  The class had been working on houses in a development near the school, so it’s been several years since they were able to help.

“The construction of this home was longer because GINW was building it, so it took the entire school year for them, but they’re in their home sooner because we wouldn’t have been able to start this home earlier without them,” says Habitat Director Dana Jelinek.

Funding for part of Home #75 came from aluminum can recycling.  The dedication comes just in time for the annual Can Jam, which many area schools take part in.

Next week the chapter will also be selecting four new families for future homes.
