Arbor Day is Nebraska’s holiday, and Grand Island kids celebrated by planting a tree.
Grand Island kids have adopted a neighborhood park. Gates Elementary has an after school club that picks up trash and does other projects and Friday they got their hands dirty, helping plant a tree.
Teacher Patsy Steenson said, "They learn to take care of environment, take care of living things, it's something they'll remember."
Mayor Jay Vavricek was on hand, as Grand Island was named a Tree City USA for the 28th time, and kids planted a flowering tree known as a tulip tree with the help of the city arborist from the parks department.
