HOLDREGE – Kids and families are invited to attend a free Healthy Kids Dayevent at the YMCA Of The Prairie on Friday, May 2, and a free Community Health Fair at Phelps Memorial Health Center on Saturday, May 3. Activities at both events are designed to help kids, families and adults live healthier.
Healthy Kids Day will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the YMCA at 1415 Broadway. Activities include:
n Giant inflatable jump houses
n Two Rivers Health Department germ station and healthy snacks
n Lego creations
n Kids Yoga and Obstacle Course
n Entrepreneurship Games
n State Patrol Rollover Car
n Car Seat Safety Booth
n Bring a favorite doll for a well-baby check by a PMHC nurse
n Holdrege Police Department Booth
n Summer reading program information from the Holdrege Library
Also, in conjunction with Healthy Kids Day, kids are encouraged to participate in the YMCA’s Rainbow Duck Run sponsored by Phelps Memorial. The race begins at 5:30 p.m. May 2. Kids will run a 1-mile race down Brown Street with the added feature this year of being doused with a rainbow of powdered color. Children in grades K-6 are invited to participate in the run. Registration deadline is April 25.
The PMHC Health Fair will take place from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, in the Phelps Memorial Health Center Rex Kelly Conference Room. The Lions screening bus will be available as well as testing for A1c, lipid panel profile, blood sugar, blood pressure and more.
The “Rollin’ Colon,” a fun and educational journey for colon cancer awareness, will be on site. Participants can walk inside this 20-foot colon and learn why colon cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable.
Several educational speakers are planned during the health fair:
n Migraine Relief/Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block (8:30 a.m.) by Jodie Scheele, PA-C and Paula Keffeler, Imaging Leader. Learn how to get long-term relief from many migraines and cluster headaches.
n Make Healthy Smoothies (9 a.m.) by Sue Keizer, Registered Dietician. Watch a live demonstration on how to make tasty & nutritious smoothies.
n Sleep Apnea (9:30 a.m.) by Tracie Elliott, Cardiopulmonary Leader. Your snoring may be doing more than just keeping your spouse awake. It may be affecting your health.
n Aroma Therapy (10 a.m.) by Janita Pavelka, CHHC, CPT. Learn the surprising scoop on essential oils.
In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y is offering a Healthy Kids week Challenge with Holdrege Public Schools. As part of the year’s Healthy Community’s Week, adults are invited to join the children in developing the following healthy habits:
n Eat Five the Fruits and Veggies Daily
n Get at Least 60 Minutes of Physical Acvitity Daily
