Motorcycle deaths dropped in 2012 and 2013 and the Nebraska State Patrol is hoping to continue that trend.
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month.
Kearney Powersports owner Craig Stokebrand advises cars should give bikers a comfortable distance, but adds that bikers should always be alert and ready for a change in traffic.
“Don’t stay in the blind spot of a vehicle, don’t stay where it’s difficult to see when riding a bike. You have to be defensive and alert to everything around you,” said Stokebrand.
Stokebrand says it also is important to check fluids, the throttle, and brakes, and reminds riders that is important to update insurance. The shop owner also advises riders to look out for debris on the road, saying even a small amount of gravel can cause a wreck.
