Ag Fest 2014 Brings Together Area Youth

Posted: Updated:
Agriculture is a constant part of our everyday life, which is why it was a featured topic for some area students this week.

This week fourth and fifth grade students from Dawson and Custer counties attended Ag Fest 2014 to learn all about the industry that keeps the state going.

Around 225 students participated in the event over the last two days in both Lexington and Broken Bow.

Students participated in hands-on activities and listened to speakers covering various topics, such as beef, corn and water.

Colleen Peterson, with Custer County UNL Extension, says it's important that students learn at a young age about agriculture, especially since it's so vital to our state.

"It just lets the students know about agriculture and the products that they use every day and that they consume every day comes from agriculture, and how important it is in our lives," she said.

Local FFA chapters also helped with exhibits for the event.

Many of the favorites for kids included the model cow milking exhibit; sheep shearing and getting an inside look at a tractor.
