Area Class Wins a Day at the Farm

Posted: Updated:
For many kids their first trip to the farm is something they will never forget.

On Tuesday a class of second grade students from Jefferson Elementary in Grand Island experienced what it's like on a dairy farm as one of three classes to win the Day at the Farm contest.

Ms. Mueller’s class was one of 20 in the state that entered the contest put on by the Nebraska Farm Bureau and the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture.

Each class submitted a video answering the question: "What would life be like in Nebraska without agriculture?"

Officials feel it's important for students to see what the farm entails at a young age.

"Sometimes this is kids' only exposure to the farm. They’re three to four generations removed. Sometimes the first time they see a cow is here on the farm. When they go to the zoo they're seeing exotic animals. So this is just a great way to see and test and touch and taste agriculture," said Deanna Karmazin with the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture.

The class visited the Wolfden Dairy Farm outside of Kearney where they had the chance to bottle feed calves and see how the milking process works.

The two other schools who won a Day at the Farm were St. Vincent de Paul in Omaha and Southern Public Elementary in Blue Springs.
