Grand Island, NE -
After more than 60 years of silence, a local World War II veteran is sharing his story in a new book.
Bill Behrens, 92, co-wrote “Soldier 37483425”with his daughter Carol Behrens Bell.
That identification number still rolled off Bill's tongue easily as he spoke at an event at the Grand Island Public Library Saturday.
The book tells the story of his journey from G.I. to horrific scenes in France and Belgium - scenes he didn't talk about until just a decade ago.
"After you've been through it and everything, it's hard a lot of times. Even yet today at certain spots, why I’ll break up. It never leaves you," said Bill.
Carol said she's always been close with her father and feels honored to be able to finally tell his story.
"I just was thrilled to think that I could know something that he had done, that he had to do and wasn't really something that people would choose to do, but that he helped save our country and to me that's just amazing," she said.
Bill said, as a stevedore, he was taught to move supplies, not fight.
