GI Plans to Hire Consultant to Address Cemetery Needs

Posted: Updated:
On this holiday when we visit the resting sites of loved ones, the Grand Island cemetery plans for the future.

The city cemetery is down to the final thousand lots; space is running out. Now they're asking the city council to spend $30,000 to hire a consultant.
Parks and Recreation Director Todd McCoy previously told NTV, "We do a great job of maintaining the cemetery, but we don't plan for expansion of cemeteries every day. We really need to hire somebody with planning expertise and do some master planning."
Tuesday night, the city council will also consider allowing more upright grave markers. The area at the cemetery with the most open spaces only allows markers that lay flat on the ground.
