PITTSBURGH, May 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- "Home Run for Health," a new, fun physical activity challenge for the workplace is now available for employers from UPMC WorkPartners. "Home Run for Health" encourages employees to get up and get moving on their way to becoming fitter and healthier.

"Finding a fun way to get employees more active is something that is much needed," said David Weir, President of UPMC WorkPartners. "There's been a steady decrease in the number of jobs that require at least moderate physical activity over the past few decades and the harmful effects of physical inactivity are being compared to smoking. 'Home Run for Health' can energize a workforce and it helps counteract the negative effects of long periods of uninterrupted sitting that so many people have on their jobs."

"Home Run for Health" is a nine-inning "game," with each inning the equivalent of one week. Participants log their activity with My Activity Tracker, an online program that assigns step totals for over 200 different activities, including walking, aerobics, lawn mowing, and playing with your children.

For every 10,000 steps logged, participants are credited with a home run. Employees can also earn incentives and prizes when they log activities for a total of 27 days during the nine-week "Home Run for Health" challenge. In addition they will receive information via email and text messages that includes recipes, tips on ways to get more movement during the day, as well as additional resources.

"It's fun and interactive, you can do it anywhere, and all you really need is a healthy attitude and a way to track your steps," said Weir. "It can help you to boost your activity and fitness levels in just nine weeks."

To see about getting your company into the game this season, employers may contact UPMC WorkPartners at 1-866-229-3507, or by email at info@workpartners.com. Costs of the "Home Run for Health" program will vary, depending on the number of employees who participate.
