Updated: An Update on the Village of Beaver Crossing

Posted: Updated:
The village of Beaver Crossing continues to recover from a May 11 tornado that destroyed several building and damaged most of the town.

Village officials say a total of 31 structures had to be demolished as a result of the storm, and over 80 percent of the town has had some damage. Additionally, over 120 trees located on public property were damaged and will have to be cleaned up.

Village Clerk Shannon Chesnut says the initial debris removal process is winding down and now the town is moving into the next phase of the rebuilding process. Over the next few months, several agencies will be assisting in this process.

Thousands of people have already volunteered to help clean up the town and now village officials are asking volunteers to wait for the next announcement for help. They expect to need many volunteers in about a month when individual homeowners will need assistance and there will be trees to plant and various other rebuilding projects.

For those still wanting to help, a fund has been set up for those impacted by the storm, with 100 percent of the proceeds to be distributed to the people of Beaver Crossing. The donations can be made out to The Hope Center and sent c/o The Village of Beaver Crossing, P.O. Box 116, Beaver Crossing, NE, 68313.

The main communication center for the village remains at the Fire Hall as the village office isn't expected to be operational again for 30 days. The phone, 402.532.3925, and email, villageofbc@windstream.net, are operational.

Seward County and surrounding counties impacted by the storms on May 11 have received a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The declaration allows those impacted by the storm in Seward, Butler, Polk, Fillmore, Lancaster, Saline and York counties to be eligible for low-interest SBA loans.
