Report: Nebraska Ranks High in Problem Puppy Mills

Posted: Updated:
Nebraska is getting a bad grade from the Humane Society of the United States.

Their recent report has the state third in the number of puppy mills that made their worst list.

It's a surprise to those at Grand Island's Central Nebraska Humane Society, who often take in animals from mills.

Twelve of the state’s mills made the list, including mills in Burwell and Guide Rock.

"We're going to be looking really hard at what we can do to educate about puppy mills. We already deal with problem puppy mills and the consequences of them not taking care of their animals," said Laurie Dethloff, CNHS executive director.

Missouri had the most problem puppy mills with 22 making the list.

Dethloff said it's a growing issue in Nebraska.

"When you're seeing the southern states take a harder line on that, rural states are going to see the influx of it just moving up,” she said. “So Kansas started seeing it. We're starting to see it."
