Professional Storm Chasers Converge on Central Nebraska

Posted: Updated:
Severe storm threats are making central Nebraska a popular place for storm chasers.

A very distinctive looking vehicle was parked in Kearney on Monday night. The Dominator 3 is part of the Weather.com professional storm chasing crew. These storm chasers and others are here for the extreme weather that's been forecasted since last week.

"The goal obviously with all storm chasers is to give early warning to make sure nobody gets hurt in a tornado," said Weather.com's Kevin Barton. "In this day and age with social media and the internet, and coverage on TV and radio, and advance warning with eyes on the ground, there's no need for anyone to get hurt."

"To be out here and to see the faces that have been affected by the tornadoes," said New York meteorology student Patrick Cavlin, "to meet people whose lives really depend on this information really brings a whole new meaning what we do as meteorologists."

Dominator 1 and Dominator 2 were in Grand Island and North Platte preparing for Tuesday's storms.
