FAIRFAX, Va., June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Nancy Cappello, Ph.D., Executive Director and Founder of Are You Dense, Inc., will join Fairfax Radiological Consultants to provide opening remarks at a special, invitation-only event this evening. Are You Dense (www.areyoudense.org) is an organization dedicated to informing the public about dense breast tissue and its significance for the early detection of breast cancer.
The open house event will introduce local physicians and office staff to the newly renovated Breast Diagnostic Imaging Center at 8318 Arlington Boulevard, Fairfax. Among the clinical services now available at the center is the first installation in the U.S. of GE Healthcare's Invenia™ ABUS, the only FDA-approved automated breast ultrasound screening for women with dense breasts that, when used in conjunction with mammography, can improve cancer detection by 35.7 percent.*
Dr. Cappello will share her unique perspective as a well-known advocate for educating women and their doctors about the importance of understanding breast tissue density. This includes the increased breast cancer risk in women with dense breasts and the implications for effective breast cancer screening. Having dense breasts makes possibly cancerous abnormalities more difficult to detect in a mammogram. The importance of the issue was underscored locally nearly two years ago when Virginia became the third state to enact a law requiring women to be notified when their mammograms show that they have dense breasts.
"We're honored that Dr. Cappello will help us introduce the local medical community to our newly stepped-up level of women's diagnostic imaging services," said Lynn Elliott, CEO, Fairfax Radiological Consultants. "Her achievements in raising nationwide awareness of the important women's health issue of breast tissue density have been remarkable. Having her speak at our open house will be a great way to help strengthen our local community's focus on the issue."
