Storms Pound Central Nebraska with Hail; Tornadoes Reported

Posted: Updated:
Strong storms ripped through central Nebraska, damaging homes and farms with hail, strong winds, and even reports of tornadoes.

The National Weather Service in Hastings says damage is widespread. They received tornado reports in several counties, including Greeley, Nance, Howard, Sherman, Merrick and Polk.

They are sending out teams to assess the damage, but say it will take at least a day to sort out.

The storm carried strong winds -- measuring around 65 miles an hour in St. Paul and Osceola, and around 70 miles an hour in York and Hastings. Winds in Ord were measured at 79 miles per hour.

Many areas were hit with hail, including York and Cairo. There were reports of broken car windows in the path of the storm.

The winds flipped a truck pulling a utility trailer near Scotia, and empty coal cars were flipped near Hampton. Winds also took the roof off a home in the Hampton area.

Rural areas were hard hit, with reports of pivots and grain bins down. The extent of crop damage is not known.

Extensive tree damage was reported in Shelton, North Loup, Ravenna, St. Paul, Prosser, Fullerton and Belgrade, among others.

Downtown Grand Island suffered street flooding.

More damage reports are still coming in, so stay with NTV for more on the aftermath of this large storm.
