President Barack Obama issued a disaster declaration Tuesday for the state of Nebraska and ordered federal aid for recovery efforts in the areas hit by severe storms over Mother's Day weekend, May 11-12.
Federal aid will be made available for emergency work and the repair and replacement of facilities damaged by the storms that included tornadoes, straight-line winds, hail and flooding in the counties of Clay, Fillmore, Saline, Saunders, Seward and York.
The storms caused severe damage in the communities of Beaver Crossing, Sutton, Cordova and surrounding areas.
“Nebraskans appreciate approval of public assistance funding for the Mother’s Day storm,” said Gov. Dave Heineman. “This will assist in the recovery process following storms that caused millions of dollars in damage in the state.”
Christian Mark Van Alstyne has been named as the coordinating officer for federal recovery operations in the area.
