New Study Shows Many Senior Home Accidents Can be Prevented

Posted: Updated:
Many injuries that send seniors 65 and older to the emergency room happen in their homes.

Adult children reported that 65 percent of senior homes have at least one potential safety issue, according to research done by Home Instead, Inc. Research also found that almost half of the accidents in homes can be avoided by making their residences safer.

Several home safety improvements can be made for under $500. They include:

  • Install grab bars on walls near the shower or tub.
  • Convert to lever handle faucets.
  • Add lighting to closets and pantries.
  • Add swing clear hinges.
  • Replace wall-mount showerheads with handheld showerheads on a hose.
