Trial Set for Former York Prison Worker Accused of Sex with Inmate

Posted: Updated:
A September trial has been scheduled for a former staff member of the Nebraska Correction Center for Women accused of having a sexual relationship with an inmate.

Michael Weichman, of Bradshaw, pleaded not guilty on Monday to a charge of sexually assaulting an inmate. The 47-year-old Weichman resigned from his position as maintenance specialist at the York prison in May after being suspended without pay.

Investigators say another inmate told prison officials that Weichman and the woman were having sex.

A court document says Weichman denied the allegation. He described his relationship with the 38-year-old inmate as playful but not sexual. She had been assigned to do maintenance work while serving time for child abuse resulting in death.

Under Nebraska law, any prison or jail worker who has sex with an inmate has committed sexual assault.
