Fireworks Stands Open in Parts of Nebraska, Officials Offer Tips to Stay Safe

Posted: Updated:
Fireworks sales begin in Nebraska on Wednesday, though some cities may have ordinances that push that date closer to the July 4th holiday.

For example, inn Kearney fireworks can be purchased and discharged beginning June 28th. Residents can purchase and discharge fireworks from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 28 to July 2 and 8 a.m. to midnight July 3 and 4.

There are just over 700 fireworks stands licensed by the state this year and only fireworks purchased from a Nebraska licensed retailer are legal, according to state officials.

The State Fire Marshall's office warns that some fireworks are still prohibited in the state, including wire sparklers, bottle rockets, nighttime parachutes and firecrackers that contain more than 50 mg of explosive composition.

Officials say it's important to take precautions when using fireworks. They offer the following safety tips:

  • Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
  • Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Soak used fireworks in water before putting in the trash can. Do not store trash can in garage or near house following disposal of fireworks.
  • Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks.
  • Stand several feet away from lit fireworks.
  • If one of the fireworks doesn't go off, put it out with water and dispose of it. Do NOT try to relight it or stand over it to investigate.
  • Always read the directions and warning labels. If unmarked, do not light the fireworks.
  • Supervise children around fireworks at all times. Call the Poison Center if necessary at 1-800-222-1222.
