Aquifer to be Recharged with Water from High-Flowing River

Posted: Updated:

The Twin Platte and South Platte natural resource districts are using the high flows of the South Platte River to recharge the aquifer below.

The NRDs have joined with Western Irrigation District and landowners in Keith in Deuel counties for the project, which diverts water near Julesburg, Colorado into a canal system that sends the water into reuse pits.

Ann Dimmitt of Twin Platte NRD explains that the pits aren't lined, allowing the water to move quickly through the coarse, gravelly soil.

Similar projects were done last September and in 2011.
