Gas Prices See Slight Decline During Busy Summer Travel Season

Posted: Updated:

Gas prices fell over the past week, sending Nebraska's average price for a gallon of gas to $3.47.

GasBuddy says Nebraska's average fell nearly 4 cents per gallon in the past week, barely beating the 3.7 cents per gallon fall in the national average, which now sits at $3.61 per gallon.

GasBuddy Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan says the recent drops in gas prices are very exciting to see in the middle of the busy summer travel season.

"Motorists have some nice relief coming at the pump to look forward to in the next week to two as these drops make it to retail outlets," said DeHaan. "Over the next week, the national average will fall back under $3.50/gal -- something we haven't seen since April, and will also drop under last year's average in the next few days. There is also the possibility for further declines if we don't see a hurricane or geopolitical tensions ruin things."

Including the change in gas prices in Nebraska during the past week, prices on Sunday were 10.4 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago. The national average is unchanged compared to this time last year.

DeHaan suggests that motorists buy only the amount of gasoline they immediately need and shop around as the quick decrease in wholesale gas prices may widen the gap in prices at the pump.

"Some stations will be buying the cheaper gasoline and passing on savings faster, leading to a wide array of gas prices," DeHaan explained.
