Downtown G.I. Fire Victims Unsure If They'll Rebuild

Posted: Updated:
The owners of one of the businesses destroyed in a July 13, fire spoke out in a statement this week.

The Alexanders have owned Ron's Transmission in Grand Island for almost 38 years. They, along with two other businesses, lost everything in the downtown blaze.

In a statement to NTV, the family wrote: "The Alexander family would like to express their thanks to everyone involved in the fire and loss we have experienced at 612 West 3rd st in downtown Grand Island. The GIFD fought a valiant fight to save our beautiful building. We are grateful no lives were lost. The professionalism they showed was above impressive. The NE Fire Marshall put long hours in to find the cause, and we will be forever grateful. For almost 38 years the community of Grand Island has supported Ron's Transmission Service and they still are. Our loss is Grand Islands [sic] loss. We do not know yet what the future will hold, but we ask any previous customers with any service problems to please contact our business number for assistance. Accidents do happen and we hope our customers and the community understand the need for fire safety and prevention."

Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical cord failure.
