Hastings, NE -
United Way volunteers say more students aren't ready for kindergarten, but they're trying to change that.
Saturday, they got help from a local car dealership.
For every test drive, Hastings Ford Lincoln donated $20 to help bring Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to the area.
It provides books to kids from birth until age five for free.
"We're finding and hearing more and more from pediatricians, school teachers, social workers, a lot of small children 0 to 5 years in age are literally not prepared when they enter kindergarten,” said Judy Hoch, Imagination Library committee. “Because of our busy lifestyles and electronics and all that, a lot of parents don't read to their children as much as they need to. So, by sending books directly to the home with the child's name on it then we have an assurance that at least the books, age appropriate books are in the child's hand."
This is the third time this year the dealership has hosted a Driven to Give event for an area cause.
"We've become involved in the community and this is one of the ways we can give back to the community," said Berice Rosenberg, Lincoln brand manager.
At the end of the day 167 people did test drives, raising more than $4,000 for the cause.
That's half way towards the United Way's goal of $8,000.
