Update: Troopers Identify Victim in Fatal Crash near Doniphan

Posted: Updated:
The Nebraska State Patrol has identified the victim of a fatal car crash near Doniphan as a 23-year-old Guatemalan national living in Grand Island.

Moises Pablo-Guarcas was pronounced dead at the scene. It appeared he was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Three others were hospitalized following the crash.

Capt. Chris Kolb said they had some difficulty identifying Pablo-Guarcas, but worked with his employer and a Guatemalan Consulate, and also used the help of a Spanish-speaking trooper.

Kolb said the driver was Mario Verdugo-Perez, 23. He was treated and released. Passenger Gilberto Chavez, 24, was also treated and released from St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Eduardo Sebastian, 17, was transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha to be treated for his injuries.

Kolb said the occupants of the vehicle lived in Grand Island.

Lt. Jeff Pelowski said the SUV involved was headed south when it apparently lost control, went into the median and rolled across Highway 281's northbound lanes near Rainforth Road.

Investigators believe Verdugo-Perez was attempting to pass a car, and overcorrected. Kolb said the vehicle that was being passed was not involved.

NSP, the Hall County Sheriff's Office, Doniphan Fire & Rescue and G.I. Fire & Rescue were called to the scene at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

"We've called out our crash reconstructionists. We're going to come out, try to piece everything back together and determine a cause for the crash," said Pelowski.

The investigation continued Wednesday.
