Antique Planes and Classic Cars Visit Minden

Posted: Updated:
Folks can check out the 'Raising Nebraska' exhibit at the new building, but some people in Minden say a visit to the Christmas City this weekend will really raise Nebraskans above the clouds. Whether you like to rev your engine or take off down the runway, classic car's and antique airplanes make a visit to Minden. The combined event hopes to bring people to the town with more activities to do and see. The antique plane show is a way for flying enthusiasts to catch up with friends, teach others and show off the latest fixes on their aircraft.

"I've flown everything from sail planes to bowing 747," said Ted Miller, a pilot from California stopping through on his way to Blakesburg Fly-In in Iowa. Like many pilots at the fly–in their love for flying starts at a young age. "It's an adventure every time especially in one of these," he said. Now with over 50,000 flying miles under his belt he makes it out to the antique shows to catch up with flying friends from all over the country.

"It's a get together where you can talk about the problems you have with your airplanes and questions you have where someone else will experience the same and know how to fix it," said Vice President of the Nebraska Antique Plane Association, Glen Bredthauer.  Some of the antiques don't look like antiques at all. "All these airplanes that have been fixed up are probably fixed up better than they were when they came out of the factory," said Bredthauer. They say seeing this kind of view of Nebraska is something that sticks with you, “and something like this could inspire little kids that could come out and look at airplanes and could remember it for the rest of their lives," he said.

The antique planes will be on display from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Pioneer Field just north of Minden. The group also hosted their famous cream can meal Friday night at the airport. The classic car show will be in downtown Minden from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.
